Damascus, the capital city, and the oldest inhabited city in the world, is delightful to explore and very safe; head to Souq al Hamidiyyya which leads to the heart of the old city and where pharmacies sell strange powders and the oldest chocolate shop in Syria stands unchanged since 1805. Amidst the spices and roasting coffee beans of Straight Street are spectacular warehouses dating back to the 18th century selling their wares with exotic names such as Khan As’ad Pasha and Khan Al Junruk.
